Does the idea of reading 500, 700, 1000, 2000 or more words per minute sound too good to be true? Then let's take a look at what speed reading is and how it all began.
Throughout history certain people have always been able to read with extraordinary speed. This ability was always marveled at, but usually explained as being an inborn talent, like singing or having mechanical ability.
The fact that practically everyone might be able to greatly increase his normal reading rate didn't become apparent until World War II. The armed forces wanted the troops to be able to instantly recognize whether a high flying, super fast airplane was ours or the enemy's. To accomplish this, they created a device called a tachistoscope which flashed silhouettes of various airplanes on a screen at speeds from 1 second to 1/500th of a second. The experiment proved that with practice, almost any serviceman could be trained to correctly identify an airplane flying at extremely high - speeds.
After the war, reading experts brought the tachistoscope into the classroom. And now speed reading has moved from the classroom to the computer.
