Putting Magic
in Medicine
We were happy to see Slide Show Magician receive the credit it deserves in
the August 1986 Macware Reviews. For the past year we have used the program
to develop a test used in environmental and occupational neurotoxicology for
assessing brain function in people suspected of being affected by toxic agents.
We present the patients with pairs of icons-some from Magnum's MacPick, others
designed in MacPaint that have a meaningful relationship, such as a man and
a woman, and pairs of unrelated icons, such as a rose and a square. After
repeated showings, we present one member of the pair and ask the subject to
recall the missing icon.
The specialized computer-assisted psychological testing procedures currently
available require further development by and support from expert programmers.
On the other hand, The Slide Show Magician virtually transforms the Macintosh
into a tachistoscope, a fundamental tool in experimental psychology. And we
don't have to rely on computer programmers to make every modification of the
show.
