PERSONAL COMPUTERS
ERIK SANDBERG-DIMENT
There may not be a computer under every tree this Christmas as the industry
hoped, but the machines have made it a lot easier to buy gifts for people
who already have computers. There seems to be an endless assortment of accessories
and gimmicks to be bought for computer owners. The digital world, like almost
any other these days, involves Continual accumulation. There is always just
one gadget to be had. The trick is to avoid buying someone yet another uninspiring
tie - or, in this case another box of floppies.

On the subject of foot work, a lot of mouse manipulators wish their rodents
were a little swifter. Mouse Mover ($19.95 from Magnum Software, Chatsworth,
Calif. 91311, telephone 818-700.0510) is a roller skate for Macintosh /Apple
II mice. Snap it, onto the bottom of one of these mice, and 99 ball bearings
turn the animal into a superslick sliding machine. So fleet-footed does the
rodent become, in fact, that it takes a few minutes for the user to learn
to keep the cursor from sliding to the edge of the screen all the time in
response to the mouse's new-found freedom.
