GYPSY

When we first heard about Gypsy, we were skeptical. We envisioned a computerized, ostensibly psychic, version of the Ouija board that, in reality, was controlled by a disk full of programmed responses.

We were mistaken. As best as we can ascertain, this product from Magnum Software appears to be legitimate.

Perhaps we should clarify that statement: If you accept that the Ouija board and fortune telling themselves are the real thing, then within that context, Gypsy is legitimate.

On a real Ouija board, the wooden pointer is moved from letter to letter by the sensitivity of human touch...presumably influenced by "the mystic spirits," Gypsy makes the Mac mouse "touch sensitive" by putting it in a ball-bearing supported, free-wheeling plastic mover that, when utilized in connection with the program's wooden game board, glides the on-screen pointer simultaneously over the on-screen Ouija board, spelling out answers to your questions.

Gypsy allows you to type-in your questions in advance, then, after you (hopefully) receive a response, a basic text editor is made available to aid in that answer's interpretation. In addition to the Ouija, Gypsy Includes an auto-writing feature that also works well with the touch sensitive mouse.

Finally, Gypsy gives you the opportunity to be either funny or serious by creating your own customized Ouija board and pointer. You can Include tone sound effects and limited animation in your masterpiece, plus Magnum's appropriately drawn graphics, or, if you prefer, imports of your own from a MacPaint program.

Whether you're a true believer in the world beyond, or are simply looking for a good party game, Gypsy makes Ouija state-of-the art. It retails for $39.95, which is a bargain if you consider that the versatile Mouse Mover alone is a $19.95 value.
